NMI Requirements re: Cultural Competency Courses for NMI Faculty & Preceptors

  • Required proof of course on cultural competency/cultural humility/anti-racism in midwifery on initial enrollment as a preceptor or faculty with NMI. If they have never taken such a course, they will have 3 months from enrolling with NMI to complete one.

  • This course (on initial enrollment) needs to have taken place within the last 3 years

  • NMI will require updating or taking a new course every 3 years. The Clinical Director will keep track of this, and remind preceptors when it’s time to renew.

  • NMI will provide a list of acceptable courses, and will update this list frequently/as needed.

  • At the time of announcement of new policy, all current NMI preceptors who do not meet these requirements will be

given 12 months to complete requirements and will be held to new standard going forward.

National Midwifery Institute, Inc. recognizes that importance of training midwives who are knowledgable of the diverse needs of broad communities outside their own, and see community activism, including anti-racism, cultural humility, and informed care for diverse communities as an essential part of midwifery. While this is a growing part of the NMI academic curriculum, it remains essential that these values are reinforced in the clinical experiences students have with their preceptors, who have the responsibility of modeling appropriate midwifery care. As such, the above requirements exist at NMI for all Clinical Faculty / Preceptors. A list of approved courses that meet these requirements can be found below.

If you would like to take an alternative course, or have another course you believe should be added to the list, please contact the Clinical Director for consideration.
