Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

At NMI we acknowledge generative artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay and is rapidly evolving. Many complex issues are raised with AI, including questions of academic integrity, ethical uses in academia, equity and access in education, privacy and security, and so many more topics! Many institutions of higher learning are needing to quickly learn how to integrate appropriate use of AI in curriculum and policy.

Concerns about not truly integrating the information, plagiarism and bypassing learning objectives were some of our first concerns. We enter into tricky territory of questioning students' academic integrity when we encounter work that is suspected of being generated by AI. Many AI checkers are not 100% reliable. This is prompting us to reevaluate how we teach and instill the values of discernment, critical and higher order thinking. We are looking closely at how we make authentic assessments to assure students are learning and deeply integrating the learning competencies outlined in the program.  Our mission is for students to become knowledgeable, proficient, and critically thinking entry-level midwives!

When used appropriately, AI tools can provide scaffolding to student's learning. You may already have used AI to help you learn. AI tools have helped people organize their thoughts, aid in learning and understanding new topics, and more. It can be argued that AI is making information more accessible (to those who know how to use it). Most of us are encountering AI on a daily basis in some form or another. You may have noticed webinars being offered on how to integrate AI into midwifery practice. Many digital platforms that we use daily are utilizing AI. However, there are still many flaws with AI, and it is limited in its accuracy, especially when it comes to midwifery.

Take for example the images created by AI with the prompt, “waterbirth” and “homebirth.”

Similar to these images, the written content that AI generates can totally miss the mark. Students using AI as a study aid will need to fact check everything AI produces, including the sources AI provides. AI is known to generate sources that are fabricated or that have nothing to do with the information it produces. While it can be used as a tool for study, clarifying basic concepts, organizing thoughts, AI is not a reliable source for midwifery learning and knowledge. Research, discernment, and critical thinking are required to become and continue to be a midwife.

As we update NMI’s curriculum and transition to distance learning, we hope to weave in ethical uses of AI, teach the basics of AI fluency, and of course, continue to teach research literacy, higher order and critical thinking. As usual, all module work is to be submitted in your original work, in your own words, referencing and citing the required and recommended learning resources. NMI’s Academic Integrity Policy already has in place definitions for academic integrity and academic dishonesty.  In alignment with this policy, it is prohibited to use AI written content for module work, as this is considered plagiarism and cheating. If you access AI to complete modules work, you must reference AI as you would any other source. All students must cite sources referenced and cited. Recently, examples of AI usage have been added to clarify how AI applies to this policy. Please familiarize yourself with these examples, while they are a few examples, they are not exhaustive of all examples of appropriate or inappropriate uses of AI. The director team is collaborating on addressing the deeper complexities AI brings to the NMI community. This consideration will be ongoing. More to come!

Upcoming Events

Black Maternal Health Conference and Training Institute

The BMHC24 theme, “Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!” will highlight the widespread restrictions on abortion care access coupled with rising cases of criminalization due to pregnancy loss which continues to widen the gaps of adverse maternal and birth outcomes in the U.S. Many of the states with the most restrictive abortion bans have the worst maternal and child health outcomes and the least supportive social welfare and family support programs, particularly for Black women and birthing people. The time is NOW to demand for comprehensive public and private insurance coverage for maternal, sexual, and reproductive health care; improving access to care across geographies and birth settings; issuing guidance to health care providers, institutions, insurance companies, and related entities on providing equitable, high-quality, patient-centered care; and funding research and programs that center and utilize scholarship of Black women and birthing people.

Joining us will be federal, state, and local representatives, those with lived experience, experts from around our nation representing various fields to discuss best practices and best innovative models used to improve maternal and infant health outcomes. Discussion will also include challenges and proposed solutions around the intersection of maternal health outcomes and IPV, SUDs, and the growing concern around syphilis, maternal mental health and more.

Transforming White Privilege On The Path To Racial Equity in Maternity Care

This workshop is about community. It is about peer support. It is about holding space for white midwives to sit in discomfort, to be vulnerable, to grow and heal together. Being with midwives in circle is amazing –– we are natural activists, and are able to open our hearts. TWP is not a "class" as in that we have lectures; rather, it is an opportunity for deep self-reflection and inner work. It is deeply personal, therapeutic, soul-work that is breaking open, and we do it together. For more on the history of our workshop, please see this Google Doc. If it has been on your mind/heart to do some inner work around your Whiteness in a supportive group context, please reach out to us at transformingprivilege@gmail.com. We'd love for you to join one of our upcoming 2024 cohorts. Cohort 2: 4/5/24 - 5/3/24, 5 zoom sessions on Fridays, 10-12:30 PST

The Black Velvet Collective

The Black Velvet Collective is a space specially curated for Black trans, queer, gender non-conforming, cisgender women, femmes, enbies, and gender non-conforming workers to join in fellowship and community building. “Smooth Talk” is a podcast show discussing many topics important to our Black Velours. The free flow of the show is accompanied by listener participation in the “Velvet Letters”. This section of the podcast is dedicated to submissions from listeners about whatever they would like discussed. Blog content posted exclusively on Tumblr, appealing to our Black Velours and focused on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Monthly Happy Hours with the Black Velvet Collective are always a breath of fresh air. Sometimes we play games on Kahoot!, other times we just have a ki about the goings on of the day. Above all else, we relax and enjoy each other’s company as we build our trust with each other. Join the collective!

Clinical Department Updates

Clinical Tracking App: Emergency Contact

Because your safety is of utmost importance to us, the CTA now has a field in the Student Profile page for you to enter your Emergency Contact information. Your preceptor will be able to view this information--but does not have the privilege to change the information in the field. Please take a moment to enter in the name and phone number of someone you would like to be contacted in case of an emergency, as soon as possible. It is my sincere hope that we will never need to use this field and as student midwives, I hope you can appreciate the benefit of having emergency plans in place--just in case!

Second Verification of Skills

NARM requires that all MEAC students complete a Second Verification of Skills for seven different skills. Please be sure that you have the most up to date form. Additionally, this form must completed by a NMI Enrolled Preceptor who is not your primary preceptor. This requires planning ahead to identify another NMI Enrolled Preceptor who can sign off on the Second Verification of Skills for you. To help students who are having difficulty identifying another midwife to sign the Second Verification of Skills form, Molly Dutton-Kenny and Tiffany Skillings are available to verify the skills and provide signatures through an online session.

Post-Graduation NARM Steps

Once you have confirmation that you have completed NMI graduation requirements, you are eligible to be a CPM Candidate and are encouraged to apply for the NARM exam. All of your clinical experiences that have been entered into the NMI Clinical Tracking App are saved in your student file at NMI and clinical credit is added to your transcript which is then sent to NARM. NARM does not receive a copy of your clinical documentation. NARM only receives a copy of your transcript. With confirmation of graduation from NMI, you will need to complete a NARM application packet for MEAC students/grads. You have the option to complete your application either online or by paper. Please note: Some of these forms may require a preceptor's signature. Additionally, only two of these forms are redundant from your NMI Clinical Documentation.

Curriculum Revisions for 2025

As you may be aware, we are working hard behind the scenes on a major revision of the Study Group (module) curriculum at NMI, to launch early 2025. We are now approximately 1 year away from launch and want to share some key updates with our student body to serve your planning purposes for your academic education. Please see this webpage we have compiled for you to review upcoming key changes to curriculum. It features an overview of exciting changes to look forward to, a new curriculum map (live in 2025), and charts for you to review module equivalency between our current modules and new versions of modules coming in 2025. As we prepare for this big shift, there are some core tips you should consider in mapping out your academic education: New versions of modules and the entire platform/curriculum will launch in early 2025. After launch, these will be the only versions of modules accepted. Many of our students will straddle this change with a portion of their modules completed in their current method, and a portion completed in the "new" method. Each student will receive credit for all modules completed in their current version and will not have to re-do work after the new curriculum is launched. While delivery mode and resources will change, students will receive an overall equivalent education. After launch of the new curriculum we will no longer accept the current versions of modules you are working on now. There will be no exceptions to this deadline. If you have a lot of open/half-finished modules you need to start finishing them and turning them in so you aren't stuck with half-finished modules that can no longer be turned in after launch of the new curriculum. You are still accountable for NMI's minimum/maximum module submission guidelines per quarter between now & the launch of the new modules. With over a year's warning, you should be able to pace yourself accordingly and select which modules you want to finish in their current versions before new modules are launched. Please review module equivalency charts. Students will receive partial credit for new modules where modules are merged, split, or created.

Graduate Spotlight: Nicole Havelka, CPM, NMI Gradaute

In North Carolina, the urgency for achieving health equity is notably emphasized, especially concerning the disparities observed in perinatal care and outcomes for pregnant individuals. Addressing these challenges requires significant attention to expanding access to certified professional midwives. Accompanying Episode #012: Birthing Equity: The Role of Certified Professional Midwives in North Carolina, we collaborated with Nicole Havleka, certified professional midwife and advocate, to bring awareness where disparities in outcomes stem from limited perinatal healthcare access, eroded trust in providers, and undervaluation of women’s voices. Nicole Havelka emphasizes the crucial role of CPMs and her documentary, “A Midwife Solution,” showcasing the vital contribution of certified midwives to patient-centered care in the state.

Graduate Spotlight: Christine Score, CPM, NMI Graduate

Christine Score, CPM, NMI Graduate

What have I been doing since I graduated NMI? CATCHING BABIES! And yes, I love it! Was it worth all the horrors of school? YES. But I don't want to sugar-coat it is a stressful, hard job but also an amazing, rewarding job. Is my life easier now that school is behind me? YES, but that doesn't mean it's an easy job by any means, it is a very demanding job. I take being a midwife very serious and in my personal opinion I think every midwife should. No one out there is hiring you to just come and enjoy their beautiful home birth, they are hiring you for all the what if's that could happen. This is what you need to be good at, all the what if's, and believe they will happen. I do not believe just anyone can be a midwife, but I do believe you can do anything you want to do if you are dedicated and move at your own pace. When I was in school there were so many obstacles, it truly felt like I would never graduate. Becoming a midwife was my life dream, it took me 21 years of planning and saving money just to join NMI and then when I was finally in school there were things that I hadn't really comprehended that midwives do, their full scope and responsibilities. I'll be honest there were times I thought to myself that I couldn't do it.... after all that money, and years and not to be able to finish my life dream, yeah, I had my sad moments. Then COVID came right when I was finishing my primaries and students were told for a time to stop attending births! But I pushed through and graduated! I learned to do all the things I thought I would never be able to do! I love being a midwife but let's be honest it is a crazy job that demands so much of you mentally, emotionally and physically, however if this is your dream then grab it, and just keep chugging along and you will graduate. Please remember this isn't the type of job you want to just rush through school to get done. You need to really be excellent at your knowledge, skills, etc. really become a lover of learning. Your learning never ends, after you graduate and get licensed you will continue learning with CEU's, with birth experiences, with research. You should want to learn because learning is what makes you an excellent midwife. After every birth I ask myself, what could I have done better? And then I change, add, research, purchase something, whatever is needed to do it better. Birth is a huge adventure not just for clients but for the midwife too, especially if you do home birth. A birth center birth is in the same location but still includes unknown adventures, however with home birth the location changes adding to the adventure. The attached picture is of our unplanned outdoor birth which included a shoulder dystocia and a hemorrhage, happy to say no transfers. Yes, we made it there in time, in fact we were there for over 24 hours, but birth is always full of surprises and well, we ended up delivering outside, in the daytime, with people around! Hang in there student midwives! You got this!

Letter Writing Campaign for Gender Inclusion in the MMOC

For a short while, MANA had updated their posting of the Midwifery Model of Care (MMOC) to be gender inclusive, and for that reason NMI linked MANA's gender inclusive version of the MMOC in the NMI student resources. However, it has recently gone back to gender exclusive language. I have written to them and a few other prominent midwifery organizations to update the MMOC with gender inclusive language. Will you join me?

For a short while MANA’s website read, (emphasis mine):

"Midwives Model of Care™ Is Client-Centered...

  • monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother/birthing parent throughout the childbearing cycle

  • providing the mother/birthing parent with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support

  • minimizing technological interventions and

  • identifying and referring women/birthing people who require obstetrical attention.

  • The application of this model has been proven to reduce to incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section."

If you would like to join in a school wide effort to encourage these organizations to update their language, here is a sample letter, and below is a list of possible organizations to write.

Dear [X-Orgization]

I hope that [X Organization] would be open to edit the MMOC to add gender inclusive language on your website. Currently it exclusively represents women and mothers, but not all birthing people.  We understand the clinical significance of gender exclusion, the exclusion of marginalized groups in midwifery, and the impact it has on these populations, and resulting health outcomes and client experiences.

I hope that [X Organization] will be open to including representation of all pregnant and birthing people by including gender inclusive language in the MMOC you post on your website. Please let me know if your organization would be open to this change.

Sincerely,
[Your Name, Title]

Welcome Tiffany Skillings, NMI’s Newest Team Member!

Dear Students, Faculty & Staff,

As the newest member of the team, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself.  I am Tiffany Skillings and I am deeply honored to join the vibrant community of NMI and its hardworking staff as the new Clinical Director!

These past twenty years, I have worked in both healthcare and healthcare education in myriad settings.  I have worked in a primary care outpatient office, a small regional hospital and a large tertiary-care /level I trauma hospital.  In these settings, I saw a great need for healthcare to be holistic, person-centered, and trauma-informed. Most importantly, I longed to work in a healthcare setting where social justice is woven into every aspect of care.  A combination of time spent in conventional healthcare mixed with some deeply personal experiences, including a sorrowful and confusing experience of loss, led to the birth of this midwife!

Over the past 10 years, I have worked tirelessly as the lone Black midwife and lactation consultant between Maine and Massachusetts.  While working at NMI, I will continue to provide care to a diverse client population, despite the wide call area and too few of us committed to do this work.  My practice will always be open to all and will continue to hold space for the underserved, rural and marginalized communities in Maine.

I have also worked in the midwifery education sector for several years.  Previously, I served as the assistant to the clinical director at Birthwise Midwifery School in Bridgton, Maine. I also served on the academic faculty of Birthwise and have taught a wide range of courses, assisted in curriculum re-design and led the curriculum design of the social justice program.  For many years, I have mentored students as a clinical preceptor through Birthwise, Midwives College of Utah and the National College of Midwifery.

That said, I am looking forward to a strong start at NMI and have been diligently working to get up to speed as quickly as possible.  My primary goal is to support a diverse array of midwifery students in developing exceptional midwifery skills so they can confidently and competently serve their communities.  As I see it, one of the strategies that will ensure this goal’s success is developing and maintaining strong partnerships with the Clinical Faculty at NMI.  I treasure the ways in which Clinical Faculty enrich a student’s learning journey and want to be sure that happens in a safe, respectful way that is consistent with the mission and philosophy of our school.

It is also my sincere hope to rally both students and preceptors to join me in the work of dismantling oppressive health care systems and developing new strategies for making equitable access to healthcare for all—one prenatal visit, one birth, one postpartum visit and one newborn visit at a time!

As I grow in my role and responsibilities at NMI, I welcome your patience and your feedback.  I genuinely desire to see you—students and preceptors alike—meet your highest potential in your work; if there is anything that I can do to support you in that, please let me know.

To your success!
Tiffany

Town Hall and Hive Scheduling

If you haven’t yet, please fill out the Town Hall and Hive Scheduling survey. So far we have 21 responses (about 20% of students have replied). We’d love to hear from everyone! This survey asks about the hive mind (topics, time and day, structured vs. unstructured) and the town hall (length, time, day). Even if you don’t have an opinion or never plan to attend, that information is helpful too.

Please note, this is NOT the same as the survey for Gloria and Molly’s NEW Hive session, in addition to the standard Sunday/Wednesday hives, which is specifically designed to support students working on the foundational modules. That survey can be found here.

New Weekly Hive Mind

If you are a new student or a student working on the Foundational Modules, there is a new weekly Hive Mind session just for you! Molly Dutton-Kenny and Gloria Gonzalez Campise will be sharing the role hosting the new weekly Hive Mind. All students are welcome to attend.

You voted and we listened. We will meet weekly on Fridays, 9-10 am Pacific Time / 12-1 pm  Eastern time. Use the usual Hive Mind Zoom Meeting (Meeting ID: 898 834 146/ Passcode: Hive)

We hope to offer you the opportunity to connect with other newly enrolled students, and get the support you need to get off to a strong start at NMI.  We will focus on the Foundational modules that are to be completed first and in order. See the Student Calendar for Instructors and the modules titles for each date. Our first Friday Hive Mind is Friday April 7th, 2023!

Requirement: It’s not new! The Study Group Module Submission Form

What is the Study Group Module Submission Form?  Well, this form has been around for years, even back when I was a student. Likely you have seen the red hyperlinked button in the Student Portal that said, “Completed this Module? SUBMIT IT HERE”, but you didn’t actually submit the module with this button, you still had to email it into NMI Study Group. This link led you to the form where you indicated what module you were submitting, that you submitted the module by email to NMI Study Group, that the work you submitted was your original work, and whether or not you submitted a module feedback form for that module. It is actually an attestation form, not a place to submit your module. Do you know the form? This form is required of all students for each module.

The form itself has not changed, it collects the exact same information. So, what has changed? The wording on the red hyperlink button was recently changed to say, “Completed a Module? Fill out the SG MODULE SUBMISSION FORM HERE” and it looks like this:

There are many students who regularly submit this form, but many who do not. For those of you who have not been submitting the form, I will send you an email with instructions on how to  catch up to date. Please check your email and complete this at your earliest convenience.

Going Forward - All students must submit this form for each module submission. It is a MEAC requirement for NMI’s accredidations. It also helps Study Group Course Instructors keep track of the order of student submissions for timely return, and reminds students of submission guidelines and expectations. You must complete one form per module you submit. You will find the link to the form in the NMI Student Portal in various places, and in each module page. Please contact Gloria@NationalMidwiferyInstitute.com if you have any questions or concerns.

NMI Reading Recommendations

Required Reading List for the Anti-Racism & Anti-Oppression in Midwifery Module:

Birthing Liberation: How Reproductive Justice Can Set Us Free, by Sabia Wade

Katie’s review: Sabia has been a guest facilitator covering our Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression module and runs Birth Advocacy Doula Trainings. Her new book, Birthing Liberation, is a fantastic call to action outlining the necessity for and practical tips toward realizing collective liberation through birth work. This book is written to speak to Black folks, IPOC folks, and white folks, and utilizes a trauma informed, somatic approach to help us learn how to regulate our systems as we engage in this difficult and essential work. We are excited for you all to read it!

Recommended Reading List for the Gender & Sexuality Module:

Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok V. Menon

Katie’s review: Alok is a poet, activist, and brilliant thought leader. In their book Beyond the Gender Binary, they describe growing up as a gender fluid kid, dig into what the gender binary is and what systems uphold it, and paint a vision of a world where all humans are loved and celebrated in all their diversity. This is a great book to read if you’re struggling to understand gender fluidity and why expansive language and practices are important.

Sounds Fake But Okay: An Asexual and Aromantic Perspective on Love, Relationships, Sex, and Pretty Much Anything Else, by Sarah Costello and Kayla Kaszyca

Katie’s review: This book brings together voices of a diverse group of LGBTQAI+ folks to discuss how they view relationships - platonic, sexual, romantic, familial, etc. It’s an excellent exploration of all the ways we relate to people and how our assumptions about relationships impact our lives. This is a great read for anyone exploring their own sexuality, curious about their queer siblings and wanting a more nuanced understanding of sexuality, or interested in understanding and respecting the wide variety of relationships their future clients might have.

It was a long and important process to find, hire, and train NMI’s new Study Group Coursework Instructors. Finally, they are here! With these fantastic midwives and instructors joining the academic department, we are excited to have a bigger team to review and update our modules and to offer each of you meaningful feedback on your submissions. Look to the grading rubric, you will begin to see their names and comments on your module returns.

Quarterly Timelines for Module Submissions

When are module submissions due to receive SAP credit for that quarter?

You can submit 2-7 modules per quarter, anytime during that quarter. The last day of each quarter is the last day to submit modules for SAP credit for that quarter.*

The quarters are as follows:

  1. Q1 - Jan/Feb/March - the last day to submit modules for the first quarter is March 31st

  2. Q2 - Apr/May/Jun - last day to submit is June 30th

  3. Q3 - Jul/Aug/Sep - last day to submit is September 31st

  4. Q4 - Oct/Nov/Dec - last day to submit is December 31st

*A note on the“Grace Period.” After a thorough review of NMI Handbooks and Policy, it has become clear that there has been no Grade Period at NMI for many years.  I erroneously spoke with a few students about a grace period for late submissions, that in actuality does not exist. If you cannot make SAP requirements for reasons of extenuating circumstances, please speak to a director about an Exception to Policy (ETP) and see the NMI student portal to file an ETP request.
